King Charles III became the new Monarch of the world and officially and publically announced the Sovereign of the UK of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on Saturday Morning at a Constitutional ceremony.
During the Constitutional ceremony on Saturday, almost 700 members of the Accession Council, the oldest functioning part of the UK’S government. They were called to convene at St James’s Palace in London.
The council includes Privy Counsellors, a select group of senior politicians, including the newly elected leader of the conservative party and PM of Britain Liz Truss, religious figures from the Church of England, the Lord Mayor of London and a bevvy of other top civil servants from across British society and the 14 different “realms,” or nations, for which the Monarch serves as the official head of state.
King Charles III immediately took over the throne after the death of his mother and Queen of Britain after 70 years of her reign.
It was the council’s role to formally recognise the passing of one Monarch and then publically announce the new one on behalf of the British government. It is part of Britain’s constitutional process.
More than 200 current Privy Counsellors were seen in the proceedings in London held on Saturday. The meeting was attended by many former Prime ministers and senior political leaders.
The Privy Council is the ancientest working part of Britain’s government, dating back almost 1,000 years. For the first time in the Accession Council’s long history, the two-part ceremony was aired on Saturday.
While the first part of the ceremony, British lawmaker Penny Mordaunt, the Lord President of the council, announced Queen Elizabeth II’s death and then the committee clerk, Richard Tilbrook, read aloud a proclamation of accession.
Members of the council then signed the proclamation.
During the second part of the council meeting, King Charles III joined the gathering at St James’s. The new Monarch read declarations relating to his mother’s demise and then swore an oath to serve the Church of Scotland, of which he is also the formal leader.
