Met Office announced that on Wednesday, December 14th, the weather across Northern Ireland is expected to get very frosty and cold until Sunday.
The weather in some regions is expected to get stormy on Sunday, leading to edge snow for some time.
The Christmas week is expected to get mild and averagely unsettled.
Today’s charts describe what the models suggest in the Christmas run-up.
An active jet stream will drive stormy Atlantic lows across the UK from Sunday onwards. Although the first is almost certain to track to our North bringing a mild Monday, following shortwave lows that the GFS currently predicts but the ECM doesn’t, could bring snow across Central England next week.
The Forecast
Temperatures will struggle to get above zero until Sunday, with hard overnight frosts.
Still cloudy in the South today, brighter sunnier from the Midlands Northward, and these clearer skies drift South later. Very cold. Snow showers for Northern Scotland/Northeast coast.
Thursday
Bright/sunny, very cold snow showers for Northern Ireland, Scotland, and the East Coast. Hard frost.
Friday
More clouds around, so bright with sunny spells. Snow showers for Northern Ireland, Western and Central Scotland.
Saturday
Bright, bitterly cold as a light breeze picks up. Snow showers down Western Ireland and Western Scotland.
Sunday
All change as a deep stormy Atlantic system arrives.
FRONT EDGE SNOW is expected mainly for hillier areas over Wales, the Peak District, Pennines and Scotland. Lower levels from the Midland Northwards should see some wet snow, and the South is likely to miss out.
Strong winds pick up, and milder stormy conditions with blustery showers follow the snow/sleet/rain.
Monday
Mild, breezy, blustery heavy showers, sunny spells, stormy.
 Tuesday
Uncertainty kicks in as the models don’t agree with the detail, but it is expected to be colder again, with temperatures around average. Breezy with a Wintry mix of showers.
Wednesday and Thursday
The GFS suggests shortwave lows crossing England and Wales could bring some snow in a cold wintry mix of sunshine and showers.
The ECM doesn’t have these features and suggests a straight breezy cool sunshine and Wintry showers, so snow over higher ground.
Friday Through to Christmas, as the Anomaly chart predicts, a moderate West south westerly flow brings spells of rain and sunnier periods. Some mild likely, but equally some cold, Average unsettled.
