In an alarming revelation, Devon and Cornwall Police have reported that they received a staggering 676 video submissions documenting dangerous driving incidents within just one month.
This influx of footage, sent to the police’s road safety initiative, Operation Snap, highlights the concerning behavior of a small minority of drivers on the region’s roads.
Operation Snap, launched to identify and address dangerous and unlawful driving, relies on public contributions to compile evidence of traffic violations.
In May, the initiative saw a significant increase in submissions compared to the same period last year, with 150 more clips received than in May 2023.
The videos depict a range of perilous behaviors, from near misses and swerving lorries to vehicles overtaking cyclists too closely and one car blatantly running a red light.
One particularly shocking clip showed a van driving on a busy pavement, endangering pedestrians. Such egregious conduct underscores the importance of initiatives like Operation Snap in holding reckless drivers accountable.
Adrian Leisk, Head of Road Safety for Devon & Cornwall Police, expressed his hope that Operation Snap serves as a deterrent to those who believe they can evade detection.
“We really hope Operation Snap acts as a deterrent to this minority who think that they won’t be detected driving in an appalling manner,” Leisk stated.
While the footage reveals some drivers’ disregard for road safety, Leisk emphasized that the majority of road users in Devon and Cornwall are safe, respectful, and considerate. However, he acknowledged that the reckless behavior of a few continues to pose significant risks to others.
“We are so grateful to the hundreds of road users who submit footage every month, enabling us to hold this incredibly poor driving to account,” Leisk said. “You are literally saving lives in doing so.”
The submitted videos come from a variety of devices, including mobile phones, video doorbells, and cameras mounted on motorcycles, bicycles, and helmets.
This accessibility allows a wide array of road users to contribute to the safety initiative, ensuring that dangerous driving is promptly reported and addressed.
The police’s proactive approach in utilizing public-submitted footage has led to numerous drivers being penalized. Many of those captured on video have been handed penalty points and issued fines, serving as a clear message that dangerous driving will not be tolerated.
Operation Snap’s success in garnering public support and participation demonstrates the community’s commitment to road safety. By working together, the police and the public can create safer roads for everyone.
As the summer months bring increased traffic to Devon and Cornwall’s picturesque roads, the police urge all drivers to remain vigilant and considerate.
The continued cooperation between the public and law enforcement is essential in maintaining and improving road safety across the region.
With the impressive number of submissions in May, Operation Snap has proven to be an effective tool in combating dangerous driving.
The initiative not only holds reckless drivers accountable but also serves as a reminder of the crucial role that each road user plays in ensuring a safer environment for all.
