United Kingdom: A Charitable Organisation providing funds to the British Armed Forces, Veterans Foundations Yesterday, October 22, 2023, marked International Stuttering Awareness Day. The Organisation honoured King George VI, who led the Britishers through tragic World War 2.
Reportedly, Stuttering is a disability in one’s communication, which affects the person’s speech and fluency. On National Stuttering Awareness Day, many Charitable Organisations, such as the National Steering Association, highlighted the stereotypes and misconceptions about Stuttering.
Stuttering is not a weakness; it’s a unique way of speaking that deserves respect and acceptance. The Veterans Foundation remarked on the day and recognised the contributions of King George VI.
They honoured him and remarked him as the Sovereign who led the British people through WW2. The King had suffered from a stammer since a young age and, when he became the Duke of York in 1920, was worried that it would restrict him in his Royal duties.
He began seeing Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue for an hour every day, including weekends, to help him feel more confident with his speech. He became King in December 1936 after his brother’s abdication.
King George VI delivered his first big radio speech on September 3, 1939, when he announced that Britain would go to War against Germany. The King believed it vital that he delivered the speech with as few stutters and stammers as possible.
Lionel and the King marked up a physical copy of the address for him to reference, with annotations marking where he should consider pausing or swapping words for something easier to pronounce.
The speech and many others he delivered during WW2 are now iconic pieces of wartime history, all had beautifully. King George VI went on to become a symbol of strength and hope for the British people during the hardships of World War Two and beyond.
Marking the day and King George’s contributions, the local community framed their thoughts and views. People kept him as a brave man, and under the circumstances, he did the country proud.
