Government of St Kitts and Nevis on July 16, in the presence of Prime Minister Terrance Drew, broke ground at the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Park for the construction of a Desalination plant.
This plant will be the second desalination plant to be undertaken by the government of St Kitts and Nevis, with the first one on the verge of completion at the Canada Estate, which on being completely functional shall enhance the island nation’s water supply.
The initiative to lay the foundation of a second desalination plant was to fortify the commitment made by the government to find sustainable solutions for the challenges faced by the country related to the deep-rooted issues of water scarcity.
The groundbreaking ceremony under the guidance of PM Terrance Drew, was attended by a distinguished gathering of officials of the Federal Cabinet, staff of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, senior government officials, and several other invited guests.

Dr Drew addressed the ceremony, emphasizing on the importance of the plant installation for the future of the nation stating that water is a fundamental resource for the wellbeing and healthy livelihoods of the citizens. This new desalination plant is a critical venture for the nation’s future as it is for the economic development of St Kitts and Nevis.
The installation of the desalination plant will be done with a production capacity of two million gallons and is estimated to cost about US $50 million. The plant will be equipped with advanced technologies to extract potable water from the seawater, thus providing a competent source of clean water.
This project will share a part of the government’s well thought strategies to nourish water security for the nation and resilience in case of environmental challenges.
Successful installation of the mentioned project will help to provide a stable water supply for the upcoming generations, and not only solve the current prevailing water needs but will also contribute to the long-term sustainability and prosperity of the nation.
