A surge of Arctic air sweeping across Britain has prompted the Met Office to issue two yellow weather warnings for snow and ice, raising concerns about hazardous travel conditions and overnight disruption across Scotland and parts of northern England.
The alerts, which came into force late Thursday and extend into Friday morning, signal a marked shift from the persistent damp, grey pattern that has dominated much of the winter. Temperatures are expected to plunge below freezing overnight, bringing the first widespread frost of February.
Forecasters say the cold snap will feel sharp and sudden for many communities after weeks of relatively mild but dismal weather caused by a stagnant “blocked” weather system that trapped cloud and rain over the country.
In Scotland, snow showers are forecast to develop widely, with even lower-lying roads potentially seeing a few centimetres of accumulation by daybreak. Ice is also expected to form quickly as surfaces freeze, increasing the risk of slips and accidents.
Higher elevations are likely to bear the brunt of the snowfall. Areas above 300 metres could receive between two and five centimetres, with isolated spots seeing as much as 10 centimetres, according to meteorologists.
A separate yellow warning covers northern England and stretches into the north Midlands. Snow may fall at low levels but is less likely to settle below 200 metres. However, hills and upland routes could still see measurable accumulations.
Travel routes crossing the Pennines are expected to be particularly vulnerable. Drivers are being urged to take extra care, especially during early morning commutes when untreated surfaces could turn treacherous.
Local authorities in Derbyshire and Cumbria have warned residents to prepare for delays on rural roads and higher passes, where ice patches may linger well into the day.
Rail services and bus operators are also monitoring conditions closely, with the possibility of slower journeys or cancellations if snow intensifies overnight. Schools and businesses in affected areas have been advised to check updates before travelling.
Despite the disruption risks, the cold air will bring clearer skies for many parts of the UK. Saturday is expected to start crisp and frosty but largely dry, with sunshine breaking through for much of the country.
For some places, that sunshine will be especially welcome. The city of Aberdeen recorded its first ray of sunshine in three weeks on Thursday, ending a prolonged spell of gloom that had dampened spirits across northeast Scotland.
Meteorologists say the brighter conditions may be short-lived. By Saturday night and into Sunday, another band of wintry showers could spread southwards, renewing the risk of snowfall at lower levels and prolonging the cold spell.
Experts warn that repeated freezing and thawing cycles could worsen road hazards, with black ice forming even where snow has melted. Pedestrians are also being urged to take care on pavements and untreated walkways.
The BBC Weather service has advised the public to stay updated through forecasts and mobile alerts, as small shifts in temperature or precipitation could quickly change conditions on the ground.
While the cold snap is not unusual for February, forecasters note that the abrupt contrast with recent damp weather may catch people off guard. Proper winter precautions — including warm clothing, extra travel time and vehicle checks — are strongly recommended.
As Britain moves deeper into the weekend, residents across Scotland and northern England will be watching the skies closely, balancing the welcome return of sunshine with the renewed challenge of snow and ice.
