Tommy Murphy’s connection to Dale Youth Academy runs deep. “I’ve been coming here since I was a kid,” he recounts. “It’s kept me and many other people out of trouble.” Living just ten minutes away from Grenfell Tower, Murphy had close ties with some of the victims.

“One of my good friends, his father died,” he recalls. “He used to help out in the gym. Coach, clean up, pad the boys, give advice and he tragically lost his life.”

The gym, which had been newly renovated just months before the fire, was temporarily relocated to a disused car park in the aftermath of the blaze.

The monumental task of rebuilding was supported by the BBC show DIY SOS, which helped establish the gym’s new location in Ladbroke Grove, a short distance from its original site. Despite the proximity, the memory of Grenfell Tower looms large.

Kyle, another boxer who trains at Dale Youth Academy, reflects on the profound impact the fire has had on him. At just 13 years old at the time of the disaster, Kyle now sees the gym as his lifeline. “It gives me a lot of inspiration,” he says.

“I got given another chance at life, I’ve got to keep going for them.” He acknowledges that the reality of the fire’s impact was not fully grasped by him as a teenager. “You don’t realize what’s really going on until later on down the line.”

For Kyle, the gym represents more than just a place to train. “It literally is my reason for living,” he admits. “Without this boxing gym, I wouldn’t be anything. It’s my whole entire identity. If it got taken away, I don’t know what I would be.”

Roshan Patel, who was also in his early teens at the time of the fire, echoes similar sentiments. Now 20, Patel speaks of how the tragedy brought his community closer together. “It gave me a reality check,” he says.

“You think more about your family and friends and you want to make the most of your time with them.” Patel finds solace in the memorials and tributes around Ladbroke Grove.

“To see that memorial on the tower makes you think they’re always going to be remembered, never going to be forgotten,” he adds.

The community’s spirit of remembrance and resilience is palpable. The gym’s new location stands as a testament to the strength and unity of those who refuse to let Grenfell’s memory fade.

“Everyone here is like your brothers and sisters,” Patel explains. “The coaches are like your uncles or even your second parents.”

As the public inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire is set to publish its findings this week, the community and the Dale Youth Academy are hopeful for answers.

The inquiry, which has been ongoing since 2018, aims to address the failures that led to the tragedy and to provide closure for the victims and their families.

Tommy Murphy remains resolute about the community’s pursuit of justice. “The people want to know what’s happened, nobody’s going to give up,” he asserts.

“If people want answers, they’ll get them and people won’t stop until they get them.” His determination reflects the broader sentiment in Ladbroke Grove, where a fierce commitment to truth and remembrance persists.
