Chimpanzees went ape for basketball while sea lions made a splash at Colchester Zoo after 40 sports balls were donated by the Essex Rebels teams.
The donation, which included basketballs and volleyballs, came from players based at the University of Essex. It marked the start of a new partnership between Colchester Zoological Society and the Essex Rebels basketball and volleyball teams, aimed at bringing the worlds of wildlife and sport closer together.
One of the day’s standout stars was Sydney, a 24-year-old Patagonian sea lion, who impressed visitors and players alike with her remarkable ball control in the pool. Zookeepers said Sydney’s playful interaction with the new equipment demonstrated her intelligence and curiosity.
The zoo explained that toys like basketballs play a vital role in enriching the animals’ lives by stimulating both physical activity and mental engagement. Such enrichment encourages social interaction and mimics the playful behaviours animals display in the wild.
“This initiative helps our animals stay active and engaged,” a spokesperson for Colchester Zoo said. “The basketballs are perfect for encouraging teamwork and fun among species like chimpanzees and sea lions.”
During the visit, Essex Rebels players Tyreese Hudson, Quinesha Lockett, Tara King, and Harry Aplin met Sydney and her lead keeper, Lizzie Durkin. The group watched the sea lions show off their newfound skills, with plenty of splashes and laughter all around.
Diana Voynova, manager of the Essex Rebels, said she was “delighted” by the collaboration.
“This is an exciting step for the Essex Rebels as we build a relationship that celebrates our shared commitment to community, family experiences, and bringing people together in fun and inspiring ways,” Voynova said.
The partnership also aims to give local children greater access to sports and nature. Zoo annual passholders will be offered discounted tickets to Essex Rebels matches, encouraging families to experience both sporting events and wildlife education in the region.
As the basketballs bounced from court to enclosure, the collaboration highlighted how teamwork between sports organisations and conservation efforts can create positive community impact. For Colchester Zoo’s animals, it was a slam dunk for enrichment — and a whole lot of fun.
