Amazon World Zoo Park has issued an urgent plea to residents of Sandown on the Isle of Wight after four raccoons recently escaped from their enclosure. The zoo is appealing to locals to assist in locating the animals, while also advising caution.
The four 18-month-old female raccoons, all sisters, arrived at the zoo just three weeks ago. However, despite the recent move, they managed to slip out of their enclosure.
The raccoons have not traveled far, but zoo officials are eager to bring them back safely. One raccoon has remained in the enclosure, while the four missing raccoons are believed to be exploring the local area.
In a public statement, Amazon World Zoo Park urged residents to be vigilant and search around sheds, bonfire piles, hedges, and trees where the raccoons may be hiding.
Given their nocturnal habits, the animals are expected to be asleep during the day, only becoming active around dusk. The zoo explained that while raccoons are generally not aggressive, the sisters may be skittish or frightened if approached.
“We are asking people not to approach or try to capture the raccoons if they see them,” said the zoo’s head keeper in a statement, “but rather to contact the zoo immediately. These raccoons are unfamiliar with their surroundings and could be hiding in places people might overlook.”
Zoo staff have also used social media to broaden their reach, calling on the local community to assist in the search.
They posted an update online that has been widely shared, explaining the situation and encouraging residents to keep a lookout. The post also noted that the raccoons are still settling into the area and may be feeling more nervous than usual.
Raccoons, known for their adaptability, are often found in suburban and rural areas in North America, where they typically forage for food.
