A male zebra has tragically died at Colchester Zoo following an incident involving a rhinoceros in the zoo’s mixed-species African habitat.
The incident occurred at approximately 14:00 GMT, according to a spokesperson for the zoo, who described it as an “extremely rare” occurrence.
The African savannah-like enclosure, designed to mimic the wild, is home to various species, including reticulated giraffes, maneless zebras, white rhinos, ostriches, crowned cranes, and greater kudus.
Despite the harmonious coexistence of these animals, occasional confrontations can occur, as was the case on this occasion.
The zoo expressed its sorrow over the loss, with a spokesperson stating, “We are devastated by this loss and thank you for your understanding and support at this time.”
“These sorts of incidents are extremely rare, and we will continue to monitor the situation over the next few days to ensure the safety and well-being of the remaining animals.”
Eyewitness Accounts
Visitors present at the zoo during the incident reported seeing signs of distress in the animals.
One witness shared their experience on Facebook, saying, “We saw the rhinos and zebras chasing as we headed inside. Staff asked us to make our way to the exit, and we didn’t have a clue what had happened.”
The visitor commended the zoo’s staff for their professionalism under challenging circumstances, noting, “Staff were amazing and acted very professionally under such awful circumstances.”

The African habitat, constructed in 2001, provides a space for diverse species to roam together, fostering a more natural environment.
Colchester Zoo, known for its dedication to wildlife conservation, has been home to several near-threatened southern white rhinos. Since the first rhino’s arrival in 1972, the zoo has celebrated the births of seven calves.
The zoo also recently faced another loss in March 2024, when Otto, a white rhino, passed away. Otto was the father of six calves, including Dara, born in January 2023.
Colchester Zoo opened its doors in 1963 and marked its 60th anniversary in 2023. Over the years, it has grown into one of the UK’s leading conservation-focused zoos.
As part of its ongoing commitment to animal welfare, the zoo has announced plans for a new African lion habitat, a multi-million-pound project to enhance the living conditions for its animals.

In the wake of the zebra’s death, the zoo confirmed that resources were being directed to ensure the remaining animals in the habitat were settled. The spokesperson emphasized that incidents of this nature are uncommon but are taken very seriously.
“This loss is deeply felt by our team, and we are taking every step to prevent such occurrences in the future,” the spokesperson added.
While the enclosure’s design aims to provide a stimulating and naturalistic environment, the complexities of managing multiple species in shared spaces are evident.
