Date:

Authorities are investigating the case of a 50-year-old man who died in a fire on Friday in his home in Deinze in the province of East Flanders.

His wife reacted aggressively when the emergency services arrived and was arrested, according to authorities, emergency services had to intervene often with the couple as a result of domestic disputes.

When firefighters arrived at the scene of the house fire, the man’s partner blocked their entrance and became aggressive towards emergency services.

The woman was arrested and firefighters extinguished the blaze but the man had already died. As with all fires, the cause is being investigated. However, the presence of a crime squad at the scene would indicate that criminal intent is being considered.

After an initial interrogation, the woman was taken to the hospital for treatment and returned to a police cell afterwards. She appeared before the investigating judge on Sunday morning, who upheld the arrest.

The public prosecutor declined to comment on the reasons for the arrest. The circumstances of the death of her husband remain unclear, but according to people living in the neighbourhood, the couple regularly argued and there was often a lot of commotion from their home.
