Fiji and the United Kingdom(UK) relations continue to strengthen in important areas of development such as trade and economy, defence and security, veteran affairs, climate change and oceans.
As per the reports, Strengthening the relationship between the United Kingdom And Fiji was discussed during an introductory call received by Dr Lesikimacuata Korovavala, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, from Dr Brian Jones, the British High Commissioner to Fiji.
Furthermore, The meeting highlighted all the prospects for stronger cooperation and discussed the first official visit of The Rt Honourable James Heappey MP, UK’s Minister of State for the Armed Forces to Fiji this week.
Additionally, The Fiji Government hailed the UK Minister of Minister of State for the Armed Forces, noting that it is the first of such a ministerial visit from the UK to the Pacific.
They further emphasized that this ministerial visit from the UK to the Pacific symbolizes UK’s strong commitment to enhancing partnership with Fiji and the region.
According to the sources, Fiji Government welcomes the idea accentuated by the UK’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, commitment to strengthening cooperation, particularly by providing opportunities for more young Fijians to join the British Armed Forces.
Meanwhile, over 1500 Fijians currently serve in the British Armed Forces, and their continued contributions to Fiji’s economy through remittances are highly appreciated and acknowledged.
Moreover, the UK also looks forward to providing Chevening scholarships with applications opening next month. Many such scholarships and professional training programs will also be available for civil servants in Fiji and the region.
The British High Commission in Fiji and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are working closely to advance economic cooperation between the two nations.
Regarding this, the UK is determined to further support Fiji’s development needs and priorities through various initiatives to assist communities in Fiji.
