Skywatchers across the UK will be treated to a rare celestial display on Sunday evening as a total lunar eclipse transforms the full Moon into a striking red “Blood Moon.”
The phenomenon occurs when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow across the lunar surface. As sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, shorter blue wavelengths scatter, while longer red wavelengths bend and bathe the Moon in a deep crimson glow.
The full eclipse begins at 18:30 GMT and will last until 19:52 GMT. However, UK viewers will only catch it at moonrise, with visibility depending on location. Eastern parts of the country, such as Norwich, will see the Moon rise around 19:25, offering the longest view.
In contrast, western regions including Cornwall and Wales will only glimpse the eclipse for a few minutes, while Northern Ireland and western Scotland will miss totality but may still observe Earth’s shadow.
Dr Edward Bloomer, astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, explained: “In the UK we won’t get to see perhaps the most dramatic reddening that you get with lunar eclipses… but it’s worth watching because you see the mechanics of the solar system at play. This is real, unfolding in front of you.”
The entire sequence begins at 16:28 with a penumbral eclipse, when the Moon first enters Earth’s outer shadow, and ends at 21:55 after the post-totality phase. The eclipse reaches its maximum at 19:11, offering a vivid spectacle for those with a clear horizon.
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are completely safe to view with the naked eye. Enthusiasts can enhance the experience using binoculars or telescopes, though experts advise finding an unobstructed viewpoint, such as a hill or coastal area, to catch the Moon as soon as it rises.
Weather conditions could play a critical role in visibility. Forecasters predict an improving outlook, with high pressure bringing clearer skies to much of the UK by evening. While some showers may linger in northwestern areas, many parts of the country are expected to enjoy favourable conditions.
Historically, lunar eclipses were seen as ominous signs, often feared as bad omens. Today, scientists explain the reddish tint as the result of Rayleigh scattering, the same process that gives Earth red sunsets and blue skies.
The last total lunar eclipse visible in the UK occurred in 2022. For those who miss Sunday’s event, the next chance will not come until 28 August 2026.
