A high-level delegation of the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office-FCDO from the British Embassy, Juba, visited Bor, Jonglei State, on Monday, September 25, 2023.
The Acting Governor and minister of Cabinet Affairs, John Samuel Manyuon, warmly received the delegation. Madam Peggitty Pollard-Davey, the Humanitarian Adviser at the British Embassy, led the delegation.
The Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Samuel Manyuon, greatly thanked the people of the United Kingdom and their partners, such as WFP, for standing with the people of South Sudan and Jonglei state in particular since the days of our struggle.
The Acting Governor reassured the UK government, donors and humanitarian partners of the solid government of Denay Jock Chagor, the Governor and Jacob Akech Dengdit – Deputy Governor of Jonglei State, mandate to ensure peace and stability last in Jonglei State and across South Sudan. Therefore, the government is committed to ensuring safety and access to humanitarian operations across the state and beyond.
In addition, the Acting Governor appreciated the contribution of the UK government in supporting peace initiatives between Jonglei State and GPAA through the Peace Building Opportunity Fund being implemented by Peace Canal and other members of the Consortium.
Furthermore, the Acting Governor lamented to the donor countries to embark on a resilience project to help South Sudanese move away from aid and emergency donations, creating too much dependency on our people.
On her part, Madam Peggitty Pollard-Davey thanked the state government for the warm welcome and appreciated the cooperation between the state, partners and donors country.
She said their mission is to come and observe and monitor the projects being implemented by their partners, such as WFP and hear out challenges and opportunities in Jonglei State.
Madam Pollard-Davey reiterated her government efforts to continue supporting the people of Jonglei State and South Sudan even though the resources are limited and the only solution will be investing in long-term solutions.
In the briefing were State Ministers, Acting SSRRC-JS, Acting SG, Madam Hester Waddams, the Political Counsellor to the British Embassy-Juba, staff from the British Embassy, Ruth Musili WFP Acting OIC, and WFP staff.
