The debate over sending troops to Ukraine remains a contentious issue between Britain and France, with both nations expressing divergent stances on military involvement.
While the UK has reaffirmed its commitment to providing non-combat support to Ukraine, France has left the possibility of sending troops on the table, depending on how the situation develops.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy firmly reiterated the UK’s position that it would not send soldiers into combat in Ukraine.
Responding to a report in Le Monde suggesting renewed talks between the UK and France on the matter, Lammy made it clear that Britain’s policy remains unchanged.
“We are focused on providing training and support to Ukraine,” he emphasized, noting that British personnel would continue to be involved in non-combat roles such as medical assistance and security operations around the British embassy in Kyiv.
The remarks come in the wake of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent visit to France, which reportedly sparked renewed discussions between the two nations about the evolving situation in Ukraine.
However, Lammy stressed that the UK would not be sending troops to engage directly in combat. “Our position has not changed,” he said, underscoring that British support would remain focused on training Ukrainian forces and providing logistical aid.
In contrast, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot expressed a more flexible stance, suggesting that France would not exclude the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine if the situation demanded it. Speaking to the BBC, Barrot stated, “We will not rule out any option, and the decision will depend on how things evolve.”
His comments reflect the broader approach of President Emmanuel Macron, who has previously indicated that France is open to a range of options in its support of Ukraine, depending on future developments.
While Barrot’s remarks were seen as leaving the door open for further action, he was quick to emphasize that France would consider military intervention only if it became necessary to meet Ukraine’s needs.
This more cautious approach aligns with Macron’s recent calls for careful consideration of the implications of further military involvement.
The British government swiftly downplayed the possibility of British troops being deployed in Ukraine. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Starmer issued a statement reiterating that there were no plans to send soldiers into combat, reinforcing Lammy’s earlier comments.
The spokesperson further clarified that the UK’s involvement would be limited to non-combat roles, such as medical assistance and supporting the UK diplomatic presence in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov responded to the discussions, labeling the idea of European combat troops in Ukraine as “unrealistic.”
Peskov suggested that there was a lack of consensus within Europe on the matter, with some leaders pushing for more direct involvement and others resisting the idea.
He noted that European countries remain divided on the issue, with no clear agreement on whether to escalate military involvement in Ukraine.
