The Defense Ministry confirmed that 40 people were brought ashore from one boat on Friday.

In 2021, a total of 28,526 people made the crossing, compared to 8,466 in 2020, 1,843 in 2019 and 299 in 2018.

The British government has a very strict asylum policy, hoping to deter migrants who want to make the crossing. Migrants who enter the country illegally no longer have the right to apply for asylum.
