Two people sustained minor injuries after a small private plane flipped while attempting to land at Westonzoyland Airfield in Bridgwater, Somerset.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 13:05 GMT on Wednesday. The microlight aircraft, a two-seater, overturned during its landing, prompting a swift response from firefighters, paramedics, and aviation authorities.
According to the South Western Ambulance Service, both occupants were taken to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton for treatment. Their injuries were reported as minor, and they were “free and clear” of the aircraft by the time emergency crews arrived.
Investigation Underway
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has launched an inquiry into the cause of the accident. A spokesperson confirmed that investigators were gathering information to determine what led to the crash.
“We have started a safety investigation and are making enquiries into the circumstances of the incident,” the AAIB stated.
Emergency Response
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service dispatched two fire appliances to the scene. A spokesperson for the service said crews arrived to find the aircraft on its roof.
“The two-seater aircraft had flipped on landing. However, both occupants had exited safely before our arrival,” the spokesperson said. “There was no fire, but our teams ensured there were no further risks at the scene.”
Airfield Operations Continue
Westonzoyland Airfield, one of Somerset’s key hubs for small aircraft and microlights, continued operations following the incident.
Authorities have not disclosed the identities of those involved, and it remains unclear whether weather conditions or mechanical failure played a role in the crash.
The investigation is expected to assess pilot experience, aircraft maintenance records, and environmental factors to establish the exact cause.
Previous Incidents at Westonzoyland
While rare, aircraft accidents have occurred at the airfield in the past. Due to its use for private aviation, Westonzoyland Airfield is subject to strict safety regulations.
Aviation experts stress the importance of thorough pre-flight checks and safe landing procedures, particularly for lightweight aircraft like microlights, which can be more vulnerable to wind conditions.
Awaiting Further Findings
The AAIB is expected to release its initial findings in the coming weeks. In the meantime, aviation authorities have urged pilots to remain cautious and adhere to all safety protocols while operating at the airfield.
Both passengers are expected to make a full recovery, and authorities have assured the public that the incident poses no ongoing risk to operations at Westonzoyland Airfield.
