Three teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man was found dead in Leysdown-on-Sea on the Isle of Sheppey. Kent Police confirmed that a 16-year-old girl and two boys, aged 14 and 15, remain in custody as investigations continue.
Emergency services, including officers and an air ambulance, were called to Warden Bay Road shortly after 19:00 BST on Sunday following reports of an altercation and assault. The victim, a man in his 40s, sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
A large police cordon has been established in a clearing behind the beach, in front of a caravan park. Access to a public footpath leading to the beach has also been blocked off, with an officer stationed at a fenced-off area near the shoreline.
Specialist officers and a police dog unit have been deployed to comb the scene for evidence. Witnesses described a heavy police presence on Sunday evening, with around 100 onlookers gathered as events unfolded.
One eyewitness, on holiday in the area, told the BBC: “I saw the helicopter landing and a lot of police personnel trying to resuscitate someone. That was about 19:30 on Sunday and now it is a crime scene.”
Anton Jasnu, a local shop owner, recalled rushing from his store when he saw CPR being administered on the beach. “It’s heartbreaking,” he said. Leysdown-on-Sea, home to just under 1,000 residents, is known for its tranquillity and seaside holidaymakers.
The South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed attendance at the scene, though the nature of the man’s injuries has not yet been disclosed.
Local MP Kevin McKenna, representing Sittingbourne and Sheppey, expressed his shock and sadness. “I am deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic incident,” he said, urging anyone with information to contact police.
Residents spoke of their disbelief at the violence. Paul Bentley, 61, who lives in Leysdown, said: “The community is going to have to deal with this. This kind of thing just doesn’t happen.” Another resident, Letitia Etherington, added: “It’s just shocking. This is a predominantly quiet area.”
Kent Police are appealing to the public for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward. The investigation remains ongoing.
