St Kitts and Nevis: PM Terrance Drew honours first female Governor General Dame Marcella Liburd

St Kitts and Nevis: The Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, felt delighted to share the update regarding International Women’s Day, which ended with a beautiful ceremony and honoured several remarkable women who have made significant contributions to the overall development of the twin-island nation.

The ceremony was held at the Government House on March 8, 2023. The Prime Minister extended his congratulations to all the extraordinary women who were recognized for their work in areas such as science; the digital, blue, and green economies.

On Wednesday, he also had the privilege of presenting the Ceiling Shatter Award to the first female Governor General of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, Her Excellency Dame Marcella Liburd GCMG, JP. Dame Marcella Liburd had played a significant role in the advancement of women within the Federation, particularly in her capacity as Minister of Health, Social Services, Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs, at a time when women empowerment was not as well received.

PM Terrance Drew said Dame Marcella Liburd has indeed shattered quite a few ceilings. Her Excellency has gained both national and regional recognition throughout her career for her significant contributions to gender affairs; and continues to serve with great humility, professionalism, bravery, and passion. She has remained a constant voice for the less fortunate.

Dame Marcella Liburd is an incredible role model for her country and serves as an inspiration across the region and generations.

Prime Minister Drew also extended his warmest wishes to all women around the Federation and the wider world.

While extending his wishes, he said, “Your government has intentionally set out to create more opportunities for women to advance in their careers within the public sector and urge all to consider patterning this step. We have come a long way in the journey to gender parity, but we still have a way to go.”

PM Drew is always at the forefront to help women in St Kitts and Nevis so that they can lead not only at the national level but also at international platforms, which will ultimately boost the name of the twin-island Federation.
