James Anderson, England’s legendary fast bowler, has announced his retirement from Test cricket following the upcoming series against the West Indies in July.

While Anderson’s retirement was publicly confirmed on 11 May, it was evident that the talks had weighed heavily on him. Reflecting on the discussions, Anderson noted that speculation about his future in recent years had been “draining.” 

He explained, “For the last six years, or even longer, it’s been, ‘how long can you go on for?’ That in itself, certainly for the last couple of years, has been quite draining.”

Despite feeling he could still perform at the highest level, Anderson acknowledged the demands of international cricket. “There’s been two or three moments on the field, if the opposition are 500-3, I’ll be thinking, ‘do I really want to still be doing this?'” he said. “They are fleeting thoughts – nothing that has stuck with me for more than an over.”

Anderson also dispelled the widely circulated story that his retirement discussions with McCullum took place over a round of golf. 

He clarified that their meeting, which also included Stokes and Key, was held in a hotel in Manchester.

As for his immediate future, Anderson is set to play for Lancashire in the County Championship matches against Kent at Canterbury and Nottinghamshire at Southport in late June, as a warm-up for his final Test at Lord’s starting on 10 July.
