A large-scale air and ground search continues for 25-year-old British hiker Eli Sweeting, who has been missing for over a week in New Zealand’s rugged Fiordland National Park.
The young man, originally from Bristol, was last seen on May 4 after setting out on a solo hike up the steep Mitre Peak in the Milford Sound area, known for its challenging terrain and dramatic mountain views.
The New Zealand Police confirmed that despite the difficult conditions, they are “remaining positive” and continue to lead an extensive search operation.
As of this weekend, more than 40 staff and volunteers, including rescue teams, helicopters, and local search dogs, are working tirelessly to locate Sweeting. His family, including his sister Serena Sweeting, have also flown out to assist with the search.
Serena Sweeting shared heartfelt messages online, describing her brother as “one of the kindest, most compassionate people” she knew. “We just want him home safe,” she posted in a fundraising appeal for the ongoing search.
The search efforts have been complicated by the dense vegetation and the steepness of Mitre Peak, which has slowed progress. At times, rescuers have only been able to move 250 meters per hour due to the challenging terrain.
The police have focused their efforts on a route leading down the mountain after a light was spotted in the area. However, the dense foliage has hindered the effectiveness of infrared cameras, making it difficult to detect any movement or signs of life.
Search efforts were temporarily halted on Wednesday and Thursday due to weather warnings but resumed on Friday and Saturday, with plans for further operations in the coming days.
Police have emphasized that despite the difficulties, they remain hopeful of locating Sweeting, citing his experience as an avid hiker.
The New Zealand Police spokesperson confirmed that the search operation is continuing, with a dedicated Land Search and Rescue team stationed near Mitre Peak to assist with the search.
“While the man has not yet been located, police remain positive as the search remains ongoing,” the spokesperson said. Sweeting, an experienced hiker, set off alone to scale Mitre Peak, a mountain that rises steeply from the waters of Milford Sound.
The rugged terrain and unpredictable weather in the region have made the search more difficult. Nevertheless, the combined efforts of police, volunteers, and local residents continue to keep hope alive for Sweeting’s safe return.
As the search enters its second week, the Sweeting family remains hopeful for a positive outcome, while authorities work around the clock to bring the 25-year-old hiker home.
