Scotland: The RNLI Troon Lifeboat shared some top tips to keep in mind before heading out on the water to encourage safe and enjoyable paddleboarding experiences. The RNLI is a charity that attempts to save lives at sea.
According to the team, whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a complete beginner, these safety measures will help ensure your time on the water is as enjoyable and safe as possible.
While encouraging the people to land in the water, the RNLI Troon Lifeboat team said, “Have you recently purchased a new stand-up paddleboard (SUP)? Or maybe you are a regular paddler? Whether you’re a complete beginner or more experienced, it’s always useful to know a few tips to help improve your paddleboarding experience.”
Firstly, always wear an appropriate buoyancy aid or personal flotation device. This will not only help keep you afloat but also make you more visible to other water users.
Secondly, bring a phone in a waterproof pouch in case of emergencies. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Thirdly, wear an appropriate leash. This is particularly important in rougher waters or windy conditions, as it will help you stay connected to your board.
Fourthly, check the weather, wind direction, and tides before heading out. If in doubt, don’t go out. It’s better to postpone your paddleboarding adventure than put yourself in harm’s way.
Finally, buddy up! If possible, go with someone else, or tell someone where you are going and when you’ll be back. This way, someone will know to raise the alarm if you don’t return as planned.
Remember, in case of an emergency at sea or on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
The RNLI has additional safety tips on their website, including those specifically for stand-up paddleboarding. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable time on the water.
