More than 1,400 residents have called for urgent changes to a newly redesigned junction in Finchampstead, Berkshire, which underwent a £5.5 million makeover last year. Critics argue that the California Crossroads intersection now resembles a “playground” and poses a significant risk to both motorists and pedestrians.
The junction, located at the meeting point of Finchampstead Road and Nine Mile Ride, was closed for several months in 2024 to implement changes aimed at enhancing pedestrian safety. However, concerns have since emerged about the unconventional road markings, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among local residents.
A petition, signed by 1,446 people, was presented to Wokingham Borough Council on Thursday, urging the authority to repaint the junction’s zebra crossing and roundabout to “reduce the risk of a serious accident.” The petition was submitted by Conservative councillor Peter Harper, who voiced residents’ concerns during a council meeting.
“Many residents have contacted me about the unconventional road markings and their personal experience of the risk of using the junction,” Harper stated. “Standard road markings for a roundabout have not been applied, meaning motorists are unsure how to negotiate the junction. They do not consistently give pedestrians priority to cross the road.”
Despite the criticism, council officials have defended the project, insisting that the redesign is beneficial to the community. Mark Ashwell, the council’s executive member for business and economic improvement, dismissed the opposition’s stance as a political “narrative” that is detrimental to local businesses.
“A six-month pursuit of a petition to affect changes to new traffic works has had a negative effect on our retail hub – this narrative has been a hindrance to our businesses,” said Ashwell, a Liberal Democrat.
“There is an extremely strong community in Finchampstead that supports its businesses in California, and I am personally determined to work with them to make the most of their newly enhanced centre.”
Martin Alder, the council’s executive member for highways and active travel, defended the junction’s design, describing it as an “innovative solution” that promotes safety and accessibility. “This is something we can all be proud of,” he added.
Residents, however, remain unconvinced. Many argue that the redesign has led to confusion among drivers, increasing the likelihood of collisions. Some have taken to social media to express their frustration, sharing images and videos highlighting instances of near-misses at the junction.
Local business owners have also weighed in on the debate. While some acknowledge the council’s intent to improve pedestrian access, others fear that ongoing controversy could deter customers from visiting the area.
The council has yet to confirm whether it will act on the petition’s demands. However, with mounting pressure from residents and local leaders, further discussions on potential modifications to the junction are expected in the coming weeks.
For now, the fate of California Crossroads remains uncertain, as the community awaits a resolution to the dispute over its safety and functionality.
