The Wykeham Martins were forced to sell the Castle and estate in 1924 to meet death duties. The last private owner of the Leeds Castle was the Hon. Olive, Lady Baillie, who was the daughter of Almeric Paget, 1st Baron Queenborough and his first wife, An American heiress Pauline Payne Whitney. Lady Baillie owned the Castle in 1926 and redecorated the interior of the first, working with the French architect and designer Armand-Albert Rateau,
