BIRMINGHAM – A surge in rodent infestations in the Washwood Heath area of Birmingham has left residents grappling with costly car repairs, as large rats chew through vehicle cables and nest under bonnets.
Locals on Drews Lane blame the worsening rat problem on the ongoing bin strike and the nearby HS2 construction work, which they say has disrupted waste management and increased fly-tipping.
Kim Blakeman, who has lived in the area for 16 years, described the rats as being “like small cats” with “really chunky tails.” She pointed to overflowing bins and dumped rubbish as a major cause of the infestation.
“The council don’t bother litter-picking our road anymore. People fly-tip, and it’s a perfect nesting site. The rats come and feed in our bins,” Blakeman said.
The problem has become so severe that some residents have resorted to trapping the rodents themselves. One resident claimed to have caught 17 rats in just two months.
Residents Hit with Repair Bills
The infestation has had a direct financial impact on locals, with multiple reports of rats damaging cars. Teacher Mariya Malik said her relative’s car had been affected three times by rodents chewing through its wiring.
“The car wouldn’t start, and that cost us around £120,” Malik explained. “It’s not a fortune, but £120 when it’s not your fault – it’s quite upsetting. Every morning, there’s anxiety about whether the car will start or if the rats have attacked again.”
Ali, another resident, found a rat’s nest on his car battery, further highlighting the extent of the problem.
Council Under Fire Over ‘Rat Tax’
Birmingham City Council, which introduced a £24 charge for pest control visits last year, has come under criticism, with opposition parties labeling the fee a “rat tax.” However, the Labour-run authority defended the charge, arguing it was lower than what neighbouring councils require.
In response to the bin strike, which has led to mounting waste on the streets, the council acknowledged the disruption and vowed to ensure every household receives at least one collection per week.
“We would like to thank residents for their understanding and patience during this period of industrial action. We apologise for the inconvenience caused,” a council spokesperson said.
HS2 Defends Waste Management Practices
Some residents have linked the infestation to the HS2 construction site, where a new control centre is being built on Drews Lane. However, HS2 officials insisted they are managing waste responsibly.
“The health and safety of our workforce and the public is HS2’s number one priority,” an HS2 spokesperson said. “Enclosed waste skips are used for bagged waste and are emptied regularly, with weekly site inspections carried out to check waste management.”
The Washwood Heath Depot, currently under construction, is set to become the main control hub for the entire HS2 network, as well as the primary maintenance and storage facility for its train fleet.
