Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has openly admitted the difficulties of his job after a frustrating 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur left his side languishing in 15th place in the Premier League.
The defeat marks the eighth loss in 12 league matches for the Red Devils, with James Maddison’s 13th-minute goal proving to be the difference at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Despite the mounting pressure, Amorim remained candid and committed to his role, stating that his job is “so hard” but that he is determined to continue working with his team and striving for improvement.
The Portuguese coach, who took over at Old Trafford with high hopes, has faced numerous challenges, not least a staggering 12-man injury list that has severely impacted his selection options.
This injury crisis forced him to fill his bench with a number of young players, underscoring the depth issues at the club.
Amorim’s post-match comments to Sky Sports reflected his frustration but also his determination. “I have a lot of problems,” he admitted. “My job is so hard but I am here to continue my job to the next week with my beliefs, and I will try to win again.”
With United trailing for over 70 minutes, Amorim chose not to make substitutions until the dying moments of the match, bringing on 17-year-old Chido Obi in the first minute of stoppage time.
The forward was one of eight teenagers on the bench, and Amorim explained that he refrained from introducing more of the younger players in a bid to protect their development.
“It is the hardest competition in the world,” Amorim said in an interview with BBC Sport. “I am trying to be careful with them. I felt the team was pushing for the goal and I felt I don’t want to change. But they will play.”
The 40-year-old manager emphasized his focus on the team’s overall development and future, rather than his own immediate job security.
“I am here to help my players,” he said. “I understand my situation, my job, I am confident in my work and I just want to win games. The place in the table is my worry, I am not worried about me.”
The loss to Tottenham continues United’s poor run of form, and questions will inevitably arise about Amorim’s ability to turn things around. With key players sidelined and a string of difficult fixtures ahead, the pressure on the manager is mounting.
Amorim’s decision to field a youthful bench, despite the team’s struggles, highlights his long-term vision for the club, focusing on the growth of young talent.
However, this approach is at odds with the immediate need for results, and the club’s supporters will be hoping that Amorim can strike a balance between development and securing vital points in the coming weeks.
With the Red Devils continuing to underperform in the league, Amorim’s resolve will be tested further. His ability to handle the mounting pressure and get Manchester United back on track will be crucial if he is to secure his future at Old Trafford.
