London, United Kingdom – A man has been charged with four counts of attempted murder after a car ploughed into pedestrians in London’s West End during the early hours of Christmas Day.
The incident, which occurred on Shaftesbury Avenue in Soho, left one person in critical condition and three others injured.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the car was travelling on the wrong side of the road when it struck the four pedestrians at approximately 00:45 GMT.
Shaftesbury Avenue, known for its bustling theatre district, was the scene of chaos as emergency services responded to the alarming incident.
The accused, 30-year-old Anthony Gilheaney, has been charged with multiple offences, including causing serious injury by driving while disqualified, driving a motor vehicle dangerously, and possession of a bladed article in a public place. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court to face the charges.
Suspect Arrested Within Minutes
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stuart Cundy commended the swift actions of officers who detained the suspect shortly after the attack.
“This was a violent attack in the early hours of Christmas Day in Central London. A suspect was arrested within minutes, and our investigation is ongoing,” said Cundy.
He expressed concern for the victims, noting, “Our thoughts are with those injured, one of whom remains in critical condition in hospital. This was a tragic incident that marred what should have been a festive day.”
Scene of the Incident
Witnesses in Soho reported hearing a loud crash and seeing people lying injured on the street. Shaftesbury Avenue, usually bustling with nightlife and holiday-goers, turned into a crime scene as police cordoned off the area to conduct investigations.
Paramedics and fire crews were also dispatched to assist in the aftermath. The London Ambulance Service transported the critically injured victim to hospital, where they remain under medical care. The condition of the other three victims, though less severe, has not been disclosed.
Legal Proceedings
Gilheaney’s charges reflect the severity of the incident. Driving while disqualified is a serious offence, and his alleged possession of a bladed article further underscores the gravity of the situation.
Authorities have not released details about the suspect’s motives or whether the act was intentional. However, police confirmed that no other suspects are being sought in connection with the incident.
Community Shock
Residents and visitors to Soho expressed shock and dismay at the attack. “It’s terrifying to think something like this could happen here, especially on Christmas Day,” said one local resident. “We come to the West End for joy and celebration, not this kind of violence.”
The Metropolitan Police have urged anyone with information or footage of the incident to come forward to aid their investigation.
As the victims recover and the legal process unfolds, the attack serves as a grim reminder of the unpredictable dangers faced even during festive celebrations.
The community now looks to the courts for justice and to the authorities for assurance of safety in London’s vibrant heart.
