East Ayrshire: In a fantastic collaboration, the Scottish Professional Football team, Kilmarnock Football Club, has joined forces with the charitable organization Crosshouse Children’s Fund to support a fundraising campaign to rejuvenate the children’s wards at University Hospital Crosshouse.
Player Killie’s defender, Jack Sanders, met some of the hospital’s youngest patients and their families, marking the official launch of the ‘Colour for Crosshouse’ appeal. This initiative aims to raise crucial funds to revamp the children’s wards, creating vibrant, comfortable, and welcoming spaces for the youngsters of Ayrshire who find themselves in the hospital.
Thousands of children receive care in these wards each year, often experiencing anxiety and intimidation due to the hospital’s imposing environment.
The stress of such an atmosphere can have detrimental effects on the long-term health and well-being of both children and their families. Many describe the wards as cold, clinical, and unsuitable for children.
Crosshouse Children’s Fund envisions a transformation, replacing the clinical atmosphere with bright, fresh spaces that children find fun, relaxing, and distracting. An innovative approach involves children, families, and hospital staff in designing artwork and themes, ensuring their active involvement throughout the process.
Crosshouse Children’s Fund has already jump-started the transformation with an initial contribution of £30,000. The first phase is dedicated to revamping the ward entrance, where many children begin their hospital journey. In the coming year, plans are to renovate the children’s wards and the Accident & Emergency section.
CEO of Crosshouse Children’s Fund, Kirsten Watson, emphasized the profound impact of the hospital environment on children’s physical and mental health. She hoped that the generous Ayrshire community would rally behind the ‘Colour for Crosshouse’ appeal through fundraising efforts or direct donations to Crosshouse Children’s Fund.
Kilmarnock FC, serving as a charity partner, has thrown its weight behind the campaign. The club’s Managing Director, Phyllis McLeish, voiced their pride in supporting this worthy cause and called upon the local community to unite in backing this initiative.
McLeish added, “As a club, we’re determined to play our part in creating a lasting legacy by helping to paint a brighter future for children across Ayrshire.”
