The Royal Navy’s final Trafalgar-Class attack submarine, HMS Triumph, has completed its last voyage, marking the end of an era for the fleet.
On Tuesday, the submarine sailed from HM Naval Base Clyde in Argyll, Scotland, to HMNB Devonport in Plymouth, where it will be decommissioned after more than 20 years of distinguished service.
HMS Triumph, the last of seven Trafalgar-Class submarines, has seen active duty across the globe, participating in operations in regions such as Australia, Afghanistan, and Libya.
Its retirement will close the chapter on a class of vessels that served the Royal Navy from the late 1980s through the early 2020s.
The submarine’s final departure from Clyde was a poignant moment, as tugboats fired water cannons in a ceremonial send-off, a traditional salute to the end of its operational life.
With a crew of 110, HMS Triumph made its way south, accompanied by tugboats and vessels from Devonport. As it entered Plymouth Sound, well-wishers lined the shores to greet the submarine, marking a fitting tribute to its distinguished service.
Commander Aaron Williams, the commanding officer of HMS Triumph, expressed pride in the submarine’s legacy. “The submarine has served not just as a vessel, but as a symbol of commitment, courage, and camaraderie,” he said.
“While this chapter of HMS Triumph’s story ends, her spirit will endure in the memories of all who served aboard her, and in the gratitude of the nation she helped protect.”
HMS Triumph, which was laid down in February 1987 at the Barrow shipyard and commissioned in October 1991, was a significant force during its time in service.
The submarine made headlines in 1993 when it completed the longest solo deployment by a Royal Navy nuclear-powered submarine, travelling 41,000 miles submerged without support to Australia.
Throughout its career, HMS Triumph played a crucial role in major military campaigns. It deployed to Afghanistan, launching Tomahawk missiles at targets, and later operated in the Mediterranean during the conflict in Libya, firing its weaponry at positions on the ground.
These missions solidified its reputation as a versatile and capable asset to the Royal Navy. Rear Admiral Andy Perks, the Royal Navy’s director of submarines, reflected on the emotional significance of the farewell.
“The last of the Cold War submarines, these vessels have helped keep our country safe for over 30 years,” he said. “It is with a mixture of pride and sadness that we say goodbye to the Triumph.”
As the Trafalgar-Class submarines retire, the Royal Navy has transitioned to the next generation of nuclear-powered attack submarines, the Astute-Class.
With five vessels already in service and two more under construction, the Astute-Class will take over from the Trafalgar-Class in safeguarding Britain’s interests on the high seas.
HMS Triumph will officially be decommissioned in 2025, and its retirement marks the closing of a significant chapter in the Royal Navy’s submarine history.
