Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit attended the launch ceremony of the ‘Build Back Equal’ Project in Dominica on Monday. The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services, in partnership with United Nations (UN) Women and United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), launched the ‘Build Back Equal’ Project on Monday.
Prime Minister of Dr Roosevelt Skerrit shared glimpses on his official Twitter account and said that the project is being implemented in Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines with funding from Global Affairs Canada.
With funding from Global Affairs Canada, UN Women is leading the implementation of the “Build Back Equal” project with UNFPA in Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This 4-year joint project will contribute to women’s economic resilience in the Eastern Caribbean by taking a comprehensive approach to addressing the barriers women face to economic empowerment and providing increased sustainable opportunities for women’s economic growth.
UN Women in the Caribbean took to Facebook and said that this World Environment Day, “Let’s demand concrete actions that will advance gender equality and combat the effects of natural hazards and climate change for a more equal and sustainable world.”
It further added,” Under programmes, such as the EnGenDER, UNTFHS and Build Back Equal projects, UN Women Caribbean is tackling the climate change concerns being faced by women and other marginalised groups such as youth and those in indigenous communities.”
Through a comprehensive approach, the project will address barriers to women’s economic empowerment, supporting governments and the private sector. Its objectives include enhancing economic opportunities, developing laws and policies, and providing access to gender-responsive social protection and reproductive health services.
CEO at Éclat Nova Luxuries of Dominica- Lana Athanaze said, ” We are excited at what the ‘Build Back Equal’ project means to the women of Dominica who will benefit from it. In the Caribbean, women entrepreneurs form only 8% of total entrepreneurs. As a woman entrepreneur and having benefited from sponsored training in leadership and empowerment by UN Women Caribbean, we look forward at how this organization’s goals to assist women to gain economic empowerment through this project and anticipate that it will make a significant improvement in the lives of its beneficiaries.”
