People suffering from back, joint, and muscle conditions in areas with the longest waiting lists for musculoskeletal (MSK) care are set to benefit from a significant funding boost.
The UK government has announced £3.5 million in funding to be distributed across 17 NHS areas, aimed at accelerating the treatment of MSK conditions and reducing pressure on waiting times.
The funding will enable the trial of innovative methods to treat MSK conditions more efficiently, with areas such as Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Norfolk and Waveney, and Northamptonshire set to receive up to £300,000 each.
The government’s initiative seeks to address the growing concerns over prolonged waiting lists and improve access to treatment for the thousands affected by MSK issues.
As of September 2024, waiting lists for MSK community services in England have reached an all-time high, with 348,799 individuals waiting for care. This has resulted in significant disruption to both personal lives and the UK economy.
According to the government, approximately 646,000 people are currently off work due to MSK conditions, contributing to a sharp increase in absenteeism across various sectors. In 2022 alone, MSK conditions were responsible for the loss of 23.4 million working days in the UK.
Alison McGovern, Minister for Employment, emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues. “For too long, people locked out of work with health issues have been forgotten about and denied the support they need to get well and get working,” McGovern said.
“It’s stifling our economy and preventing those eager to progress in life from unleashing their full potential. This multi-million-pound funding boost means MSK patients across the country will get the help they need, as we give clinical leaders the resources to innovate, get people off waiting lists and get Britain working again.”
The government’s funding initiative is part of its broader ‘Plan for Change’ proposals, which aim to reduce waiting times for various health services and provide more flexible and innovative solutions to meet the needs of patients.
