LONDON — Arsenal centre-back Gabriel Magalhaes has committed his long-term future to the club by signing a new contract that will keep him at the Emirates Stadium until 2029, the club announced on Thursday.
The 27-year-old Brazilian defender had previously been under contract until 2027, but the extension reflects his growing importance under manager Mikel Arteta and the club’s long-term vision as they continue their quest for domestic and European success.
Gabriel joined Arsenal in 2020 from French side Lille in a £27 million move and has since established himself as one of the cornerstones of Arteta’s evolving side.
He has made 210 appearances in all competitions, scoring regularly from set pieces and forming a formidable partnership with French international William Saliba since 2022.
In a statement released by the club, Gabriel expressed his pride and gratitude for the journey he has been on so far. “I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I’m so happy and I’ve learned a lot,” he said.
“I’m so proud of myself — it’s an amazing journey, and I’m so happy to continue it. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club and my family loves the club, too.”
He added, “Arsenal is an amazing club and I’m so proud to sign a new contract. I love the supporters, my team-mates, I love this stadium. I’m so proud and thank you for all the support. We continue together for the future.”
Arteta has often spoken about Gabriel’s leadership qualities and influence on the pitch, particularly in big matches. The defender’s aerial presence and tenacity have made him not only a defensive stalwart but also a consistent threat in attacking set-pieces.
However, Gabriel’s absence due to a hamstring injury in the final two months of the 2024–25 season coincided with a downturn in Arsenal’s form.
The Gunners fell short in their Premier League title bid and were eliminated in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals by eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain. His return to full fitness is expected to be a major boost for the team ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.
Meanwhile, Arsenal continue to be active in the transfer market as Arteta seeks to strengthen the squad further.
Talks are ongoing with Real Sociedad over a potential deal for Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who is said to be keen on a move to the Premier League. The Gunners are also reported to be in pursuit of a top-class striker to bolster their attacking options.
Gabriel’s contract renewal marks the latest step in Arsenal’s strategy of securing key players on long-term deals, with Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard, and Saliba all having extended their contracts in recent months.
With Gabriel now tied down until 2029, Arsenal fans will be hopeful that his presence at the heart of the defence will help deliver long-awaited silverware in the years ahead.
