The dual citizenship programme came into effect on April 1, 2022, and both governments signed the Agreement in March 2021.

The Spanish government shared the information by issuing a press release that “France is the first country outside Latin America with which Spain has signed such an agreement.”

The Spanish General Directorate of Legal Security and Public Faith, on March 3, 2021, shared the report with the Ministry of Justice that the Spanish government has established the criteria for a dual citizenship application for French Citizens, which has been publicized on the Official State Gazette of the country (BOE).

The directives will affect all Spanish and French citizens who will henceforth acquire citizenship in another country and those who have had to renounce their previous Spanish or French citizenship to become citizens of France or Spain.

The latter can now apply to regain their previous citizenship and enjoy their dual nationality from when they apply for it.

The Instruction approves the application guidelines and registry procedures that allow the implementation of the nationality agreement between Spain and France, applicable in all Civil Registry Offices and Notaries that may be affected, both in Spanish territory and in Consular Offices,” the press release further explains.
