General Sir Patrick Sanders, the former head of the British Army, has issued a stark warning that the UK could find itself at war with Russia within five years if it does not act swiftly to replenish its military stockpiles.
In a recent appearance on the Money Maze podcast, Sanders cautioned that the UK’s support for Ukraine has made it vulnerable to potential Russian retaliation, underlining the urgency for Britain to rebuild its military strength.
Sir Patrick Sanders, who stepped down from his role in June, argued that the depletion of the UK’s arsenal, exacerbated by ongoing military aid to Ukraine, poses a significant risk to national security.
“We must recognize the consequences of our decisions. While our support for Ukraine is crucial, it has left us exposed. Without replenishing our stockpiles, we could face direct conflict with Russia within five years,” Sanders said.
The general’s comments come in the wake of similar warnings from his successor, General Roland Walker. Walker, who took over leadership of the British Army, echoed Sanders’ concerns, stating that the UK must be prepared for a large-scale conflict within the next three years.

One of Sanders’ key criticisms during his tenure as army chief was the decision to send 14 Challenger 2 tanks to Ukraine earlier this year.
