Dominica: Reconstruction of Layou Road is nearing completion, announces govt

Dominica: The reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Layou Road from the Hillsborough Bridge eastwards to the York Valley Bridge in the Commonwealth of Dominica are almost completed. The twenty-three million, fifteen thousand, seven hundred & seven dollars & twenty-eight cents entered the road surfacing phase on Carnival Monday, February 20, 2023.

The government of Dominica has updated that the asphalt work will end by Wednesday, March 1, 2023, and the project is funded through a financing agreement from the CDB – Caribbean Development Bank and constructs as well as rehabilitates around 4.0km of roadway.

Furthermore, the excavation for road realignment away from the river bank will also take place, and river diversion measures will also be conducted to limit the damaging effects of the river. The construction will also include the repair of road drainage infrastructures in order to include slipper drains and box culverts, along with road markings and signage.

The Parliamentary Representative for St Joseph – Darron Llyod, felt pleased with the progress of work so far, and he is excited about the economic opportunities in agriculture as well as tourism which will be created once the project is completed. Additionally, Minister Llyod highlighted the significance of this project to Dominica’s climate resilience efforts.

The government of Dominica further said that the Layou Road Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Project had been contracted to Emile Gaddarkhan et Fils Ltd.

Notably, the Ministry of Public Works, Public Utilities and the Digital Economy of Dominica informed the general public, especially motorists of the Layou Valley Area, that road paving works will be undertaken between the Hillsborough Bridge & York Valley Bridge. Therefore, from Monday to Wednesday, this section of the road will be closed daily from 7 am to 8 pm. However, limited local access will be allowed.

The Ministry apologised to road users for any inconvenience caused and requested the understanding as well as the cooperation of motorists and the general public in that regard.
