Heathcoat Cricket Club in Devon Left Heartbroken After Blaze Destroys Pavilion
Heathcoat Cricket Club in Devon has been left reeling after a fire ravaged their beloved clubhouse, a significant blow to the local community and cricket enthusiasts alike. The blaze, which broke out early Saturday morning, completely destroyed the wooden pavilion situated on the grounds of the National Trust’s Knightshayes Court.
According to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at 05:22 BST. Upon arrival, they discovered the clubhouse fully engulfed in flames. Despite their efforts, the building was reduced to rubble, leaving behind only charred beams and a bed of smoking ashes.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, with investigations ongoing. The National Trust confirmed that parts of the Knightshayes estate were temporarily closed to visitors due to the incident, although the estate has since reopened with the exception of the parkland car park.
Heathcoat Cricket Club, one of Devon’s largest cricket clubs following a recent merger with Sampford Peverell and Tiverton Cricket Club, has been a cornerstone of the local community. The clubhouse, constructed in 2013 in collaboration with the National Trust, was a central hub for club activities and gatherings.
Chris Salter, one of the team captains, expressed his profound sadness upon learning of the disaster. Speaking to BBC Radio Devon, Salter said, “I woke up at 06:30 to the news. I haven’t seen it—I’m not sure if I want to go and see it. Everyone who’s part of the club absolutely loves it. It’s such a community hub for all of us, and to go and see it at this stage—I don’t think I’m quite ready yet.”
The emotional toll on the club’s members has been significant. The destruction of their clubhouse, which had become a cherished space for players and supporters alike, has left them heartbroken. The building’s loss is felt deeply by those who have spent countless hours contributing to and enjoying activities at the club.
Matt Theedom, Managing Director of the Devon Cricket Foundation, conveyed his sympathy to those affected. “Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to everyone associated with Heathcoat Cricket Club.
Having supported the club and witnessed the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears that went into building the clubhouse, it’s heartbreaking to see. I have no doubt that the Devon Cricket community will rally around to support Heathcoat and its members at this distressing time.”
The fire has also affected the National Trust’s Knightshayes Court, leading to some operational disruptions. A spokesperson from the Trust noted, “The fire was devastating and has caused significant disruption. We are currently working with local authorities and will continue to assist in any way we can during the investigation.”
The Heathcoat Cricket Club was established as a key part of the community, serving not just as a venue for cricket matches but also as a social and recreational space for residents. The loss of the pavilion is a major setback for the club, which had recently seen growth and increased involvement following the merger.
In the aftermath of the fire, support and condolences have poured in from across the cricketing community and beyond. The club’s members and supporters now face the challenging task of rebuilding not just their physical structure but also their sense of community and shared purpose.
As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, the focus remains on supporting the club and its members during this difficult time. The Devon Cricket Foundation and local authorities are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
