Sciensano Health Institute published the figures on Tuesday that the number of new Covid-19 cases recorded in Belgium dropped below 5,000 per day.According to the data published by the Sciensano Health Institute on Tuesday, all other indicators are also showing a downward trend.
During 23 and 29 April, an average of 4,785 new daily Covid-19 infections were identified, a 20% drop from the previous seven days. The positivity rate now sits at 27.3%, meaning just over one out of four tests resulted positive with the COVID-19 (coronavirus) infection.
The highly transmissible Omicron variant, Omicron BA.2, now accounts for 94.8% of all cases.
During the same week, 15.1 patients suffering from COVID-19 died daily, which is 23% less than the previous week. The total number of deaths in Belgium since the pandemic is 31,494.
This figure also includes individuals who died of another reason for death but who happened to be infected, meaning there may be an overvalue of Covid-19 deaths caused by the virus.
Between 26 April and 2 May, 137.9 patients suffering from Covid-19 were admitted to hospitals each day – down 22% from the previous seven days.
This number reflects how many people are hospitalized directly because of the virus, not those admitted with another condition and then test positive for Covid-19.
On Monday, 2,227 people were in Belgian hospitals due to an infection, 200 fewer than last Friday. Meanwhile, the number of people treated in intensive care sits at 133 (-13).
This number covers all patients who tested positive for Covid-19, including those first admitted with a different condition.
