The third and final day of the November Meeting at Cheltenham was overshadowed by tragedy as three horses died during Sunday’s races. The losses of Abuffalosoldier, Bangers And Cash, and Napper Tandy cast a somber cloud over one of Britain’s premier jump racing events.
Abuffalosoldier, a seven-year-old gelding ridden by Sean Bowen and trained by Warren Greatrex, collapsed after a victorious run in the Holland Cooper Handicap Chase, the fourth race of the day.
Despite the immediate intervention of veterinary professionals, the horse could not be saved. Cheltenham Racecourse issued a statement offering condolences to the horse’s connections, saying, “Our heartfelt condolences are with his connections.”
The same race witnessed another fatality when Bangers And Cash, trained by Ben Pauling, collapsed after being pulled up at the 14th fence. The exact cause of death for both horses is suspected to be cardiovascular collapse, according to Liam Kearns, lead veterinary surgeon for Jockey Club Racecourses.
Speaking to Racing TV, Kearns explained, “In both cases, we call them cardio-vascular collapse, as you can’t say at this stage whether it is a true heart attack or whether it is a major blood vessel that has ruptured. But it is of that nature and therefore it is a sudden death situation.”
He further added that such occurrences are rare but possible under high-intensity racing conditions, likening them to sudden collapses seen in human athletes during extreme exertion. “It’s a huge coincidence that it happened twice in the same race,” he noted.
In the fifth race of the day, Napper Tandy, trained by Matthew Smith, sustained a fatal injury after falling two hurdles from the finish. The Irish-trained horse’s death added to the day’s devastating toll.
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) issued a statement expressing its sorrow for the losses. A spokesperson said, “The losses of Abuffalosoldier, Bangers And Cash, and Napper Tandy at Cheltenham today are a tragedy for all connections, and the thoughts of all of us at the BHA are with them.”
The spokesperson emphasized the care provided to all three horses, saying, “They were provided with outstanding care and attention throughout their lives by those who cared for them, and nobody will be more heartbroken tonight than those individuals.”
The BHA also confirmed that investigations would be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatalities, as part of the industry’s ongoing efforts to minimize risks in the sport.
Sunday’s events have reignited discussions about equine welfare in competitive racing. While race organizers and trainers underscored their commitment to horse welfare, the rare but tragic incidents highlight the inherent risks of high-stakes racing.
