Chelsea’s ambitions of securing automatic qualification for the Champions League knockouts suffered a major blow as Atalanta came from behind to claim a deserved victory in Bergamo. The defeat leaves the Blues facing increasing pressure with only two league-phase matches remaining.
Both sides entered the contest level on 10 points, having recorded identical results across the opening five matches. That parity was evident for long periods, with little separating the teams in an intense and competitive encounter.
Chelsea made a positive start and controlled possession in the early stages, looking to quieten the raucous home support. Their breakthrough arrived in the first half when Joao Pedro capitalised on a precise cross from Reece James, turning the ball home from close range.
Despite falling behind, Atalanta remained composed and threatening. Former Charlton and Everton winger Ademola Lookman was a constant menace down the flank, regularly unsettling Chelsea’s defence with his direct running and sharp movement.
The Blues had opportunities to extend their lead after the break. James went close with a driven effort that flashed wide, while Alejandro Garnacho later tested goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi with a fierce shot straight at him.
Atalanta gradually increased the pressure as the second half progressed, pinning Chelsea deeper into their own half. Their persistence paid off when former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca rose highest to head in a well-delivered cross, bringing the hosts deservedly level.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Serie A outfit sensed vulnerability in the Chelsea back line. Seven minutes from time, the Blues retreated instead of closing down Charles de Ketelaere, allowing the forward time and space to unleash a driven strike past the goalkeeper.
Chelsea pushed desperately for an equaliser in the closing moments. Joao Pedro came agonisingly close to rescuing a point, but Carnesecchi produced an outstanding save to preserve Atalanta’s lead and send the home crowd into celebration.
The result sees Chelsea slip from the top eight automatic qualification spots to 11th place. With two matches remaining in the league phase, the margin for error has narrowed considerably as the prospect of play-off involvement looms.
Atalanta, by contrast, climb to third place, moving three points clear of Chelsea. The Italian side continue to build on their impressive form and look increasingly confident of progressing deep into the competition.
For Chelsea, the defeat adds to a worrying recent trend. Since their emphatic 3-0 win over Barcelona at the end of November, the London club have now gone four matches without victory in all competitions.
Questions are also being raised about Enzo Maresca’s rotation policy. The Chelsea manager made five changes again for this fixture, following similar alterations in recent domestic and European matches.
Maresca defended his approach after the game, insisting that the core of his side remains consistent. He pointed out that eight or nine of the starting XI had featured in previous high-profile matches against Tottenham, Barcelona and Arsenal.
However, defensive lapses at key moments continue to undermine Chelsea’s performances. In a tournament where concentration is crucial, the late loss in Bergamo could prove costly.
Chelsea will now look to respond when they host Pafos on January 21, knowing victory is essential to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Atalanta, meanwhile, return home with confidence as they prepare to face Athletic Club.
