Chelsea secured a much-needed victory against Wolves at Stamford Bridge, ending their five-game winless streak in the Premier League and climbing into the top four with a 3-1 win.
A dominant second-half display, including two quick-fire goals, was enough to see off the visitors, who remain precariously close to the relegation zone.
The match began with a tense first half, where Chelsea struggled to find their rhythm. Wolves took the lead in first-half stoppage time through Tosin Adarabioyo, who capitalized on a deflection following a corner.
However, Chelsea’s goalkeeper Robert Sanchez made an error that allowed Matt Doherty to equalize, much to the frustration of the home fans.
Sanchez, who had been a key figure in Chelsea’s defense all season, moved a few yards off his line, allowing Matheus Cunha to deliver a perfect cross that Doherty headed home to make it 1-1.
This marked Sanchez’s fourth mistake of the season leading to a goal, putting the goalkeeper under further scrutiny after a series of errors.
Despite this, Chelsea bounced back with a clinical second-half performance. Marc Cucurella, making his 100th Premier League appearance, put Chelsea ahead with a close-range finish after Noni Madueke’s cross was flicked on by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
Just minutes later, Madueke himself scored, nodding in a corner delivered by Trevoh Chalobah, who was making his first appearance for Chelsea since returning from his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca defended Sanchez’s performance despite the costly mistake. “You said it was the fourth mistake leading to a goal?
OK, and how many times did he save us? More than four,” Maresca said in his post-match interview with Sky Sports. “Mistakes happen to him, the strikers, the midfielders. He is doing well.”
The victory saw Chelsea move up to fourth place in the Premier League, two points clear of Manchester City and Newcastle United.
The win was particularly important for Chelsea as they look to maintain their position in the top four, especially after a series of disappointing results.
With 51 goals conceded, Wolves’ defense has been a major concern this season, and their inability to deal with Chelsea’s second-half onslaught proved costly.
Wolves’ manager, Vitor Pereira, will need to address his team’s defensive frailties if they are to avoid a relegation battle, as they remain 17th in the table, only outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
Despite their attacking efforts, they were unable to recover from Chelsea’s early dominance in the second half.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will take heart from the victory as they seek to build momentum in their quest for Champions League qualification.
The win has given the Blues a much-needed boost ahead of their upcoming fixtures as they look to challenge for a top-four finish.
