Jose Mourinho’s latest return to Stamford Bridge ended in disappointment as Chelsea battled to a narrow Champions League victory over Benfica, courtesy of a first-half own goal from Richard Rios.
Mourinho, who replaced Bruno Lage as Benfica boss just 12 days ago, was warmly received by Chelsea supporters. The Portuguese coach was serenaded before and during the game, with the “Special One” responding by waving to both ends of the ground.
But despite the affection shown by the fans, Benfica gifted Chelsea the crucial breakthrough. Colombian midfielder Rios inadvertently deflected Alejandro Garnacho’s cross from Pedro Neto into his own net, leaving goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin helpless as the ball flew past him.
Chelsea dominated possession throughout the match but struggled to create clear chances. Garnacho, on his second start for the club, squandered a couple of opportunities, while young substitute Estevao Willian forced Trubin into a save late on with a stretching header.
For Mourinho, the frustration was clear as his side fought hard but ultimately failed to test the Chelsea defense enough. Despite Benfica’s efforts, they were unable to find the equaliser, leaving Mourinho’s return overshadowed by the decisive own goal.
Chelsea’s night was not without its issues. Substitute Joao Pedro was sent off deep into stoppage time for a second yellow card, marking the Blues’ third red card in four matches. However, unlike recent games against Manchester United and Brighton, the late dismissal did not alter the outcome.
The result was Chelsea’s first Champions League win since March 2023, breaking a poor run of European results and providing much-needed relief for manager Enzo Maresca. Prior to this victory, Chelsea’s only success in September came in the EFL Cup against League One side Lincoln City.
While questions remain over Chelsea’s attacking sharpness, the result was a significant step forward. The Blues now turn their focus to the Premier League, where they face Liverpool in a key clash on Saturday.
For Mourinho, the loss served as a reminder of the challenges he faces with Benfica. Despite his emotional reception in west London, Stamford Bridge was not a stage for triumph this time. Instead, it was Chelsea who walked away with a long-awaited European victory, leaving Mourinho with work to do in his new role.
