The HMS Prince of Wales may have made a high-profile stop in Singapore with its carrier strike group on Thursday, but its flight deck carried a glaring absence — just 11 F-35B Lightning II fighter jets instead of the usual 12.
The missing jet, aircraft number 034, remains stranded nearly 2,000 miles away at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in southern India, caught in a diplomatic and technical limbo that is attracting increasing international attention.
The stealth fighter, part of the UK’s fifth-generation fleet built by US defence giant Lockheed Martin, was forced to make an emergency landing nearly two weeks ago after encountering bad weather during a sortie over the Indian Ocean.
Since then, the aircraft has been parked in the open on the tarmac, exposed to monsoon rains and watched over by armed personnel from India’s Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which guards vital infrastructure.
Photos of the lone jet—captioned “034 he so lonely”—have been circulating online, drawing concern and curiosity in equal measure. Nicholas Drummond, a defence industry analyst and former British Army officer, expressed surprise that repairs had not been completed.
“Surprised that a team of flight mechanics with spare parts hasn’t been flown in to fix it. Must be a bigger problem than we thought,” he said in reaction to the images.
British defence officials insist there is no cause for alarm, emphasising their confidence in the security arrangements. “We are grateful to our Indian allies for their continued support in keeping the aircraft safe,” a Royal Navy spokesperson told The Independent.
The spokesperson also refuted Indian media speculation that the aircraft had not been sheltered because of British mistrust.
“To minimise disruptions to the regular airport operations, the aircraft will be moved to a space in the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul facility hangar once specialist equipment and UK engineering teams arrive,” the spokesperson said.
Despite the reassurances, the situation has stirred concern among defence analysts about the risks of having such a technologically advanced platform grounded on foreign soil.
The F-35B Lightning II boasts some of the most sophisticated avionics, radar-evading stealth capabilities, and encrypted communications systems in the world—technology that India, which is not a partner in the F-35 program, does not currently possess.
British officials have played down fears of espionage, stating that the aircraft remains under secure surveillance and that critical systems are either disabled or protected against tampering. The Independent has reached out to India’s Southern Air Command for further comment on the security protocols in place.
The incident underscores the challenges of deploying cutting-edge military hardware across vast geographies and through unpredictable weather, as well as the logistical complexities involved in securing and repairing such aircraft abroad.
With every passing day, however, pressure is mounting on the UK to resolve the issue and return the prized aircraft to its strike group. Until then, number 034 remains on the tarmac — a symbol of both military prowess and operational vulnerability.
