A 17-year-old girl tragically died after being struck by a vehicle on the M5 motorway, shortly after exiting a police van transporting her to custody. The incident occurred late on Monday evening, between junctions 24 for Bridgwater and 25 for Taunton, Somerset.
According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the teenager was being transported by Avon and Somerset Police when she left the stationary police vehicle.
The collision took place at approximately 23:00 GMT, when the girl, who had exited the vehicle, was hit by another car traveling on the opposite side of the motorway.
The IOPC, which is now investigating the incident, confirmed that the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. “Our sympathies are with the girl’s loved ones and everyone affected by her death,” said an IOPC spokesperson.
They also added that Avon and Somerset Police had notified them that the teenager had exited the vehicle shortly before the collision.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with an ambulance arriving within minutes. Despite their efforts, the girl was confirmed deceased at the scene. No other individuals were injured in the incident.
Detective Chief Superintendent Rachel Shields, from Avon and Somerset Police, expressed her condolences to the teenager’s family. “Our thoughts are first and foremost with the girl’s family, and we are providing them with support during what is an incredibly difficult time,” she said.
“A critical incident was declared, and a mandatory referral has been made to the IOPC.” She also highlighted that the officers involved, along with other witnesses, would have access to welfare support following the traumatic event.
In the wake of the tragedy, the M5 was closed in both directions for several hours while investigations and repairs were carried out. National Highways confirmed the northbound carriageway was reopened by 10:20 GMT on Tuesday, with the southbound lanes following shortly after.
The closure caused significant disruption, with motorists facing delays of up to 90 minutes southbound and around 30 minutes northbound. Local roads, particularly the A38 near North Petherton and Bridgwater, also experienced long delays, further exacerbating the traffic problems.
The IOPC is urging anyone who witnessed the incident or may have relevant dashcam footage to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
The loss of such a young life has deeply impacted both the community and the officers involved. “This is a tragic incident, and we will continue to provide all the support necessary to everyone affected,” said Shields.
