LONDON — A 16-year-old boy was shot dead in broad daylight near Stockwell Tube station in south London on Tuesday, marking the third homicide of a young person in the capital this year.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene on Paradise Road after officers responded to reports of a shooting at around 14:30 GMT.
The victim’s identity has not yet been disclosed as officers work to inform his family. No arrests have been made so far, and a police cordon remains in place as investigations continue.
Superintendent Gabriel Cameron of the Metropolitan Police described the incident as “enormously shocking” and extended condolences to the victim’s family.
“Our thoughts are with the young boy’s family at this devastating time,” Cameron said. “This is an enormously shocking incident which I imagine will cause huge distress to the local community.”
Local officers have been deployed to the scene to gather CCTV footage and interview witnesses in an effort to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the urgency of bringing those responsible to justice.
Florence Eshalomi, MP for Vauxhall Camberwell Green, expressed her sorrow over the tragedy, calling the loss “a life wasted.”
In a statement, she said, “I am very sad to hear of the fatal shooting of a young boy in our community. My thoughts are with his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
Residents in the Stockwell area voiced their shock and fear in the aftermath of the shooting, describing an escalating sense of unease over youth violence in the city.
“It’s heartbreaking to see another young life lost like this. Something needs to change,” said a local shop owner who wished to remain anonymous.
The incident adds to a growing list of violent crimes involving young victims in London this year. Community leaders and residents alike have called for increased efforts to combat youth violence and improve safety on the city’s streets.
Authorities are expected to maintain a heightened police presence in the area as investigations proceed. Road closures on Paradise Road remain in effect, causing minor disruptions to local traffic.
The Metropolitan Police have appealed to the public for any information that might assist in identifying the perpetrators. The investigation continues.
